(Ottawa, Ontario – June 14, 2004) – On May 30-31, 2004, international delegates met in Montreal, Canada, to contend with the issue of nutritional supplement use and misuse in sport by athletes.

The motivation for this symposium stemmed from the need for athlete-centered recommendations and practical advice with respect to nutritional supplement use. To meet this requirement, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Sport Canada and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) jointly organized a two-day symposium where participants could discuss the issues  and make specific recommendations for action in the short, medium and longer term. Delegates were selected from within the sport community, anti-doping organizations, medical and scientific fields, industry and governments, and included elite athletes and coaches.

As a follow-up to the advisory note that was circulated to the sport community May 27, 2004 providing notice of the International Symposium on Supplements in Sport, attached you will find the media release and outcomes statement which were circulated by the organizers of the symposium immediately after the event.

The CCES will work together with Sport Canada and the COC to develop further messages for the Canadian sport community and for athletes heading to the Olympics / Paralympics in Athens.

The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to promote ethical conduct in all aspects of sport in Canada, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.
