Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport to Support Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission in Rebuilding its Anti-Doping Program

(Ottawa, Ontario – June 4, 2014) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) will partner with the restructured Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) to help build capacity for anti-doping in Jamaica.

The CCES and JADCO have formalized their partnership by signing a Joint Initiative Agreement.  Over the next 15 months, the CCES will support the development and growth of JADCO’s anti-doping program in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and mandatory International Standards.

“We are pleased to provide our expertise to JADCO and assist them with the development of their anti-doping program,” said Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES. “Not only are we proud to be supporting JADCO’s efforts, this partnership also helps to ensure our Canadian athletes have confidence that all opponents continue to strive to play fair.

Last March, the CCES and the World Anti-Doping Agency met with JADCO staff and its new board of directors to discuss a project plan and identify a number of areas for cooperation. These initial discussions will now guide the work of JADCO and the CCES over the coming months.

“The Commission is pleased to consolidate its partnership with the CCES, and their guidance will be crucial in the further development of our anti-doping program,” said Carey Brown, Executive Director of JADCO. “We look forward to the growth and strengthening of the information exchange between our organizations, which is a positive example of international cooperation in the fight against doping in sport.”

JADCO is mandated to, among other things, implement the policies and programs of the Government of Jamaica against doping in sport and doing all things necessary to implement and comply with the World Anti-Doping Code. JADCO was formally established with the passage of the Anti-Doping in Sport Act, 2008 as the national anti-doping organization for Jamaica and is an agency within the purview of the Ministry with responsibility for Sports in Jamaica, the Office of the Prime Minister.

The CCES is an independent, national, not-for profit organization with a responsibility to administer the Canadian Anti-Doping Program. We recognize that true sport can make a great difference for individuals, communities and our country. We are committed to working collaboratively to activate a values-based and principle-driven sport system; protecting the integrity of sport from the negative forces of doping and other unethical threats; and advocating for sport that is fair, safe and open to everyone.
